ABSTRACT

This thesis is the analysis from books and other related document, which consists of three objectives, namely: 1.) to study method of meditation practice as appearing in Theravada Buddhist. 2.) to analytically study the ways of practicing the subject of meditation of Somdet Phra Ariyavamsagatañāna Somdet Phra Sangharāja (Suk ñānasangvaro). 3.) to analyze the ways of meditation practice of Somdet Phra Ariyavamsagatañāna Somdet Phra Sangharāja (Suk ñānasangvaro) in Theravāda Buddihism.

According to the meditation method mentioned in Theravada Buddhist, Buddha teaches about percept, meditation, and wisdom that person must be calmed in both percept and body in order to avoid bad deeds and must be consumed a regular eating habit in order to remain the existence of body. Moreover, one must regularly clean his or her soul by practicing meditation and walking meditation together with being conscious in every step and cleaning the soul to be lacked of the 5 Hindrances and practicing the primary instincts or the first stage of Buddhist meditation. All things above are enhancing present happiness and wisdom which are concluded in the scripture of Theeravāda Buddihism in Buddha era, and Ko-sa monk also emphasizes meditation as it is considered as a base of introspection (Vipassana).

The study on meditation method of Somdet Phra Ariyavamsagatañāna Somdet Phra Sangharāja (Suk ñānasangvaro) mentioned that the first stage of meditation is to dedicate oneself to the Triple Gems and meditation teachers by preparing five containers of flower and popped rice, five candles, and five incenses into a rectangular tray. Secondly, one has to ask for the five percepts, apologize to the Triple Gems, and then pray and ask for Pra-luk-sa-na-pra-kut-tha-ga-pree-ti, which is the first order of the meditation stages. Meditation person must concentrate at two inches under his or her navel together with praying Put and tow while practicing which takes around 15 to 20 minutes, and then notifies both feelings and visions to the instructor. If it a pass, the next stages will be permitted to practice follow by meditation order. This thesis will illustrate the main stages of meditation practice. The first stage called Pra-pree-ti-five consists of five rooms of Pra-luk-sa-na and five rooms of Pra-luk-sa-mee, reversing and advancing the kao-sub, kao-kueb, kao-vat, ork-vat, and kao-sa-god. Second stage called Pra-yu-kon-Tum-six and Pra-suk-sa-ma-ti for the third step. At the end of all three stages, the instructor will allowed the meditation person to strengthen his or her contemplation by the method called kao-sa-god. After that one are allowed to practice Ar-na-pa-na-sa-ti which is used for breath practicing consisting of nine spots, and then notifies both feelings and visions to the instructor at the end of every spot. Then, there are the stages of ga-ya-ka-ta-sa-ti consisting of ten rooms of ka-sin, Ar-su-pha, and ten meditative contemplations. Next, it is a stage of ar-nu-sa-ti which consists of up-pra-mun-ya-phrom-vi-harn, ar-har-ray-pra-ti-koon, ja-tu-tad-wat-tharn, and a-ru-pra-charn respectively. Introspection or Vipassana is the further stage which one has to practice seven sorts of vi-sut-ti. Until the last order of med-ta-ja-tow-vi-mut-ti, it is to practice the highest merciful of Bua-barn principle of virtuous existence to loosen vindictive actions and toughs in order to meet the highest purpose of nirvana.

Based on the study on meditation of Somdet Phra Ariyavamsagatañāna Somdet Phra Sangharāja (Suk ñānasangvaro), the method of practicing are practical and relevance as it is an ancient meditation method of which has been inherited by Rāhula who is the Buddha son. This meditation study was first introduced in the era of King Ashoka. Thera (monk) were sent in order to teach and propagate Buddism. It has been passed from period to period since Suvarnabhumi, Tawaravadee, Sukhothai Ayutthaya until Rattanakosin era. Somdet Phra Ariyavamsagatañāna Somdet Phra Sangharāja (Suk ñānasangvaro) is the one who have inherited this type of meditation in the period of Rattanakosin in order to maintain the way of meditation method which can be resulted in the highest objective of nirvana.
